Masonry repair covers the structural brick-and-mortar work on a chimney: replacing individual damaged bricks, repointing deteriorated mortar joints, and applying breathable waterproofing to protect the surface from future moisture damage.

• Cracked, chipped or spalling (flaking) bricks.
• Mortar joints that are crumbling or missing entirely in places.
• White, chalky staining (efflorescence) on the brick surface.

Common Causes

Water intrusion combined with freeze-thaw cycling is the most common driver — water gets into the brick or mortar, freezes, expands, and weakens the material a little more each cycle. Age alone also plays a role, since original mortar mixes from decades ago wear differently than modern ones.

Our Process

Brick repair replaces individual damaged units without disturbing the surrounding structure where possible. Tuckpointing (repointing) removes deteriorated mortar to a consistent depth and replaces it with fresh mortar matched to the original. A breathable waterproofing sealant can follow to shield the surface without trapping moisture inside.

Why Climate Matters Here

Freeze-thaw cycling drives most of the masonry damage we see in colder markets, while humidity and heavy rain drive moisture-related staining and slower deterioration in warmer, wetter ones. Either way, masonry damage compounds — a small repointing job today is a smaller job than the same chimney five years from now.
